Early childhood services plan intentionally for language, numeracy, motor skills and friendships. They observe, scaffold and document. Yet toilet learning, the most observable milestone of all, is singled out and left to families, waited for rather than taught. This piece makes the case that readiness is not a moment that arrives but something built over months, and that when home and centre pull apart, the child is the one who absorbs the difference.

The 2026 update to the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework never mentions toilet learning. But it names the capability, the teaching method and the family partnership the milestone depends on. Read closely, the VEYLDF makes it difficult to keep treating toilet learning as a matter of care alone, and because its five outcomes are shared nationally, the alignment holds well beyond Victoria.
